Your Therapist’s Professional Will: If Not Now, When?, with Ann Steiner, PhD, MFT, CGP

Your Therapist’s Professional Will is a document detailing your wishes for the continued care of your clients in case of your absence, whether planned or unplanned. While the concept of creating a Professional Will resonates with most helping professionals, the prospect of putting one in place seems daunting for nearly all of us. By making the commitment to create your Professional Will, you will gain peace of mind knowing that you have done everything possible to assure continuity of care for your clients. Introducing the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS), with Philip Erdberg, PhD, ABPP

More than 90 years since its introduction, the Rorschach remains one of the most clinically valued methods for describing personality in action. This workshop is for participants who have some prior familiarity with the new Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS). An evidence-focused system based on the most current research, R-PAS emphasizes those aspects of test performance that have the strongest empirical foundation, the most transparent relation to underlying psychological processes, the greatest utility as rated by experienced Rorschach users, and the most reliable normative comparisons. Because R-PAS is designed to generate interpretations that are meaningful and experience-near and because its scoring program generates easy-to-read graphic output, it lends itself well to therapeutic and collaborative assessment. The workshop begins with a review of administration and coding issues, an update on new R-PAS developments, including discussion of the system’s use with children and adolescents. The remainder of the workshop focuses on cases that illustrate the clinical application of R-PAS in a variety of settings. Participants will review the standardized R-PAS format for presenting and reviewing results, receive training in the principles and procedures for generating interpretive inferences, and learn how to use the standardized profile output when providing personally meaningful feedback for clients. Exit Stage Right: An Introduction to Personal Estate Organization, with Jeanne Smith

As psychologists, we have probably all had clients who were grieving the loss of a loved one and were extremely distressed, angry, scared, or overwhelmed because they were left with a mess to clean up. Is that the legacy that you want to leave, or to receive? Legal/Financial planning is only a small part of estate planning. One of the greatest gifts you can give your family NOW is to record all the information they will need to help you if you should become incapacitated or when you die (Note: that's WHEN, not IF). Your information is at your fingertips and in your head; it will not be so for your family unless you make it so! This 2-hour workshop, presented by the professional organizer who created the field of estate organization in 1992, gave new perspectives on getting your estate affairs organized. Understanding the Psychological Aspects of Breast Cancer, with Jan Austin, MFT

Breast cancer is often an extremely devastating illness that effects about 1 out of 8 women over the course of their lifetime. Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer suddenly have their lives turned upside down. Therapists, as well as other community supports, can help women deal more effectively with the stresses and challenges of this disease. This course will provide an introduction to the basics of breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and the common psychological issues that accompany the various stages. (This understanding is an important foundation for working with breast cancer clients.) Brief case vignettes will be included to illustrate common psychological issues and helpful interventions. The final portion of the class will be a presentation by several therapists who have undergone breast cancer treatment (and other significant illnesses) who will discuss how they dealt with their clients during this time. (Presented October 30, 2011 at Breast Cancer Connections, 390 Cambridge Ave, Palo Alto, 650-326-6686, www.bcconnections.org.)

DSM-5 Update, with Robin Rosenberg, PhD

The aim of this workshop was to provide an overview of the major changes, from the discontinuation of the multi-axial system, to the lowered threshold for  Generalized Anxiety Disorder and some Somatoform Disorders, the addition of new disorders (such as Nail-Biting Disorder) and the revamping of other disorders (such as the newly-renamed Gender Dysphoria and Illness Anxiety Disorder).
