CHAIR: NICOLE WERNIMONT, PSY.D. (Sally Broder, Psy.D. Board Liaison) The mission of the SCCPA Committee for Social Action is to harness the power of psychological science - and the knowledge, skills, and abilities of professional psychologists - to affirm and uphold the human rights of all people. We believe that psychologists have an obligation to speak out against abuses of power, violence, and oppression in their many forms, and that psychological associations at the local, state, and national levels are uniquely positioned to facilitate our collective ability to do so. Therefore, in this committee, we aim to identify and employ strategies for activating the potential of our profession in service of peace and justice within our society. Such strategies will be grounded in the principle of partnership with communities directly impacted by violence, and will aim to uplift the often silenced voices of those most directly and frequently targeted by violence within and outside of our profession. In so doing, we aspire to discharge our duty as outlined in the Preamble to the APA Ethics code, which states: "Psychologists are committed to increasing scientific and professional knowledge of behavior and people's understanding of themselves and others and to the use of such knowledge to improve the condition of individuals, organizations, and society. Psychologists respect and protect civil and human rights and the central importance of freedom of inquiry and expression in research, teaching, and publication. They strive to help the public in developing informed judgments and choices concerning human behavior. In doing so, they perform many roles, such as researcher, educator, diagnostician, therapist, supervisor, consultant, administrator, social interventionist, and expert witness." We, additionally, hold as part of our mission a commitment to ongoing learning and education about how to effectively harness the unique resources o
